Resource Center of Dallas, in conjunction with AIDS Arms, is providing emergency assistance for evacuees displaced by Hurricane Katrina that are HIV+ or living with AIDS.  With an exodus out of New Orleans and a massive placement of over 25,000 evacuees to the Dallas Metropolitan area, AIDS Services Organizations are coming together to meet the needs of HIV positive individuals in such dire circumstances.

Resource Center of Dallas is providing food, hot meals, dental care, insurance assistance, and HIV Handbooks with a description of local services.  AIDS Arms is providing outpatient medical care, medication assistance, case management and linkage to other AIDS Service Organizations in the area, as well as connecting them to the Red Cross and family reunification efforts. Free voicemail service is available to refugees at both organizations so individuals can receive important messages about housing, appointments, family members and other important information.  Resource Center of Dallas can also provide a permanent mailing address for refugees.

HIV Testing is available at the Nelson-Tebedo Health Resource Center and the AIDS Arms Peabody Health Center so that individuals can confirm their HIV status, the first step needed in order to receive needed care.  Please bring picture identification and any other documentation, if any is available.

Donations of food can be made at the AIDS Resource Center’s Nutrition Center, and financial contributions for Hurricane Evacuee Relief can be made online by clicking here, by phone via credit card, mailed, or made in person at Resource Center of Dallas 2701 Reagan St. Dallas, TX 75219.

Resource Center of Dallas helping GLBT refugees

Housing Resources:  Resource Center of Dallas is coordinating efforts to provide temporary housing to GLBT refugees.  Many GLBT community members have called to offer their homes to house GLBT individuals and families affected by Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flooding.

If you wish to offer temporary housing space, Resource Center staff and volunteers are taking information from people wanting to house evacuees.  Please call 214.528.0144 so we may collect information about you and the people you can help.

Evacuee Mail Boxes:  We are offering to evacuees a permanent mailing address at the Resource Center where their mail can be forwarded to them.  Many GLBT refugees may be moving multiple times and will need a centralized location for their mail.

Evacuee Voice Mail: We are also offering voice mail that will include a direct dial number so that evacuees can have a consistent voice mail without worrying about their cell phone.  They will be able to access phone messages from anywhere.

Public Computer Access: The Resource Center has a public computer at its main location at 2701 Reagan St.  Individuals can use the internet to locate housing, employment and health issues

As the State of Texas opens up our cities and homes to our neighbors, left distraught in an unprecedented state of need, Resource Center of Dallas embraces those needing help, as a resource indeed.

Please note that we are unable to receive donations of clothing or furniture.
